What was the be'er like?
It was like a sieve that would roll with them as they traveled.
Once the flags camped and the mishkan was standing, this rock would come and plant itself in the courtyard of the ohel moed.
The princes of the tribes would then all come and stand on it and sing "come up o' well" - "ali be'er", then the wellsprings would come up.
Medrash Rabba Bamidbar

Just some thoughts.
The lesson I take from this is:
When you come to study Torah in the beis Hamedrash, mishkan Hashem, after your travels and travails, you should stand upon the rock, your difficulties in Torah study, "kashin ka'sela". You should "sing" your Torah study, don't hit the rock. Then, when you are be'chavrusa with the other Jews around you, who also "sing" for the waters of Torah flow, the wellsprings of Torah will come up for you.
Know also, that the fountain of your Torah study comes with you when you travel. Even when the water isn't flowing as it does in the beis medrash, it still accompanies you as you study in your travels, "u'velechtecha ba'derech."
