Ok, that helps. I'll think about apples.  So, say Chabad is divided up into different "personalities"
1)the older russian generation
2)the "geza" Crown heights crowd.
3)crown heights bal Teshuva community
4)put of town chabad
5)out of town Chabad bal Teshuva community
6)Shluchim
7)shluchim who are also bal Teshuva.
8)Tranplanted Crown Heitsers
9)children of baalei Teshuva
(like me! )

So, the modern Chabad or "Chabad light" are an offshoot of number 2 and number 8 and sometimes 9, depending on the circumstance.

Mendy Greenstein
While each person is an individual there are some trends.
They are characterized by not wanting, or knowing enough of other ways, to throw off their Chabad identity. They are not as interested in Torah study or study of chassidus. They are very concerned with making money. There is a lot of mixing between young male and female and immodest behavior. Seriously, there is a difference when you do an act out of rebellion and when you do it in the view point thatbits normal. Many of the men shave. The woman do not wear tziut clothing or very tight clothing. Thier sheytels are very long and, frankly provocative. Their called, "hot Chanys"
I also have found many of them rude and unpleasant to hold a conversation with, but many of the very frum in CH are like that too so, that's not a defining factor.

In general they are much more materialistic and have a rebellious bent in comparison to other members pf the community.
Being chilled out, from California I have a lot of trouble relating to them. That being said, many go to shul regurlarly, farbrenge and love the. They are sort pf the OTD kids who grew up and a struggling to define their place within the community they spent their youth rebeling against. It's hard for me to give a nuanced, fair viewpoint of them. Then again, by virtue of my background (out of town child of BTs) it's very possible I share some of their "outside" values and perspectives, such as my dislike for the complete separation of men and women that is prevelent in CH social mores. Although they go way to far for me and have a bad attitude about it etc...
